Roberta, Georgia, developed as a crossroads community in Crawford County, a region whose earliest inhabitants were the Creek people. The land's fertile soil and proximity to rivers made it attractive for Native Americans long before European settlement. Following the Treaty of Indian Springs and the removal of Native peoples in the 1820s, the county opened to settlers from Virginia and the Carolinas. Knoxville was originally the county seat, but as the railroad expanded through the area in the late 19th century, Roberta emerged as a more practical center of commerce and transportation.

Agriculture formed the backbone of Roberta's economy from its earliest days. Cotton became the dominant crop, fueling both wealth and hardship, particularly during Reconstruction and the decades that followed.
