Rome, Georgia, has one of the most storied pasts of any city in the state, blending natural beauty, Native American heritage, and European settlement. Roads were expanded throughout the 20th century, while modern highways like U.S. Routes 27 and 411 improved regional access. Bridges across Rome's rivers also linked neighborhoods and fostered urban growth. These advancements helped Rome maintain its role as the dominant economic and cultural center of northwest Georgia.

The city's character has long been defined by its institutions and traditions. Rome is home to several colleges, including Berry College, one of the largest campuses in the world, and Shorter University, which contribute significantly to the local culture and economy.
