Over time, the college became one of the most respected centers of higher education in western North Carolina, attracting students from across the state. The loss of the institution was offset by continued economic development in nearby Morganton and Valdese, as textile and furniture industries began to dominate the Burke County economy. The town incorporated in 1977, formalizing its governance while preserving its historical roots. Infrastructure improvements throughout the 20th century—electricity, public schools, paved roads, and modern utilities—further integrated Rutherford College into the greater Hickory-Morganton-Lenoir metropolitan area.

Today, Rutherford College is a small but vibrant community that values its balance of history, education, and quality of life. The town sits along Interstate 40, making it convenient for residents who work in Hickory or Morganton while enjoying the tranquility of small-town living.
