Salisbury is one of North Carolina's oldest inland cities, located in the Piedmont region and serving as the county seat of Rowan County. The area was originally inhabited by Native American groups who occupied the land between numerous rivers and creeks and used the Piedmont's wooded ridges for hunting and travel. In the mid-18th century, colonial settlement extended westward from the coast into the interior, and the Rowan precinct was created in 1753. Early settlers—principally of Scotch-Irish, German, and English origin—arrived along wagon roads and river valleys, establishing farms, mills, and small trading posts.

By 1789, Salisbury was formally chartered and designated the county seat. The city developed around the courthouse square and quickly became a center for law, commerce, and transportation in the central Piedmont. Its location at the crossroads of several early roads helped Salisbury attract merchants, artisans, and tradespeople. Agriculture—tobacco, grains, and livestock—was foundational, while local mills and blacksmith shops served neighboring rural communities. Over time, the city's economic reach extended across Rowan and into adjacent counties, making it a focal point in the region.

The 19th century brought both challenge and growth. The arrival of railroads in the 1850s connected Salisbury with Charlotte, Fayetteville, and other markets, increasing trade and development. The city also played a role in the Civil War era and Reconstruction period, hosting military encampments, being affected by troop movements, and later dealing with recovery and reinvestment. Through the late 19th century, industry began to take hold: textile mills, furniture factories, and brickworks became part of Salisbury's economic base, complementing its agricultural roots.

Infrastructure and urban growth characterized the early 20th century. Streetcar lines, electric lighting, paved streets, and municipal services modernized city life. Educational institutions—such as Catawba College (founded 1851) and Livingstone College—expanded their presence in Salisbury, further cementing its reputation as a center for learning and culture. Historic districts emerged, with Victorian homes, classical revival public buildings, and tree-lined residential neighborhoods characterizing many parts of the city. Commercial corridors along Main Street and Innes Street grew, with local shops, banks, and institutions anchoring civic life.

In the modern era, Salisbury has evolved into a balanced small city that values heritage, revitalization, and community life. Its downtown district has seen reinvestment, with historic buildings repurposed for retail, restaurants, galleries, and offices. Cultural offerings include museums, performing arts, festivals, and local events that draw both residents and visitors. Neighborhoods range from historic districts with early-20th-century architecture to newer residential developments. Despite growth and proximity to larger metropolitan areas, Salisbury retains a strong identity: a hub for commerce, culture, and community in the central Piedmont region.
