Long before Sanford was established, the region was inhabited by Native American groups, primarily the Siouan-speaking tribes that lived throughout the North Carolina Piedmont. Lee County, created in 1907 from parts of Chatham and Moore counties, would eventually include the growing settlement of Sanford, which had already begun forming in the late 19th century.
