Sky Valley is the northernmost city in Georgia, situated high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Rabun County. Originally inhabited by Cherokee tribes, the area's rich mountain valleys and streams provided resources for centuries before European settlers arrived. Following the Cherokee removal in the 1830s, the rugged terrain remained sparsely populated, with farming limited to small homesteads due to the elevation and geography.

The 20th century brought new opportunities for Sky Valley. In the 1970s, developers envisioned a mountain resort community that would take advantage of the cool climate and scenic beauty. This vision led to the creation of Sky Valley as a planned resort town, complete with a golf course, country club, and Georgia's only ski resort. Skiing became a defining feature of the community, attracting visitors from across the Southeast during the winter months. Although skiing has since declined due to climate changes and limited snow, the resort character of the town remains central.

Transportation improvements, including U.S. Highway 441 and access to scenic byways, made Sky Valley more accessible to visitors from Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This ease of access helped cement its reputation as a vacation and retirement destination.
