Smyrna, South Carolina, is one of the smallest incorporated towns in the state, yet it possesses a rich and enduring history that reflects the spirit of rural York and Cherokee Counties. Before European settlement, the region was home to the Catawba Nation, whose presence along the Broad and Catawba Rivers shaped the area's early cultural landscape. Small stores, a post office, and a depot soon followed, forming the nucleus of the town.

In the early 20th century, Smyrna thrived as a typical Southern farming town. Cotton remained the primary crop, but diversified agriculture helped sustain the local economy during difficult times, including the Great Depression. The town's churches served as community centers, with congregations like Smyrna ARP Church providing spiritual guidance and hosting gatherings that strengthened social bonds. Despite its modest size, Smyrna developed a strong sense of civic pride. Its location between York and Blacksburg made it a convenient stop for travelers, and its residents were known for their industriousness and hospitality.

The advent of the automobile and improved roadways in the mid-20th century brought new changes to Smyrna. While the railroad's role declined, highways such as State Road 97 connected the town to nearby centers of commerce. Electricity, modern communication, and access to education improved the quality of life for residents. Many families remained tied to the land, while others commuted to textile mills and factories in York County. Though small in population, Smyrna retained its independence and identity, avoiding absorption into larger municipalities and preserving its historic charm.

Today, Smyrna is a peaceful and picturesque community that embodies the character of rural South Carolina. Its population remains small — fewer than 100 residents — but its appeal lies in its serenity, open landscapes, and strong sense of belonging. The old railroad bed, historic churches, and family farms stand as reminders of its enduring heritage.
