Smyrna is one of Rutherford County's oldest and fastest-growing communities, located between Nashville and Murfreesboro in Middle Tennessee. The town traces its origins to the early nineteenth century when settlers established farms and trading communities throughout the area. The community was named after the ancient city of Smyrna mentioned in the Bible and gradually developed into an important regional center due to its strategic location and fertile farmland.

Agriculture dominated Smyrna's economy throughout much of the nineteenth century. Farms producing tobacco, corn, cotton, and livestock supported local commerce and helped establish the town's long-term economic foundation. During the Civil War, Smyrna's location near transportation routes and the Nashville area gave it strategic military importance. Following the war, the town gradually rebuilt and expanded through agriculture, commerce, and railroad development.

Transportation infrastructure significantly shaped Smyrna's growth during the twentieth century. Rail lines, major highways, and eventually Interstate 24 improved regional connectivity and transformed the town into a growing suburban and industrial center. Smyrna also became home to Sewart Air Force Base during the mid-twentieth century, which contributed substantially to the local economy and population growth before its closure.

Modern Smyrna experienced major industrial and residential expansion beginning in the late twentieth century. The establishment of large employers, including the Nissan manufacturing plant nearby, brought significant economic development and attracted thousands of new residents to the region. New neighborhoods, schools, parks, retail centers, and recreational facilities rapidly expanded throughout the community as Rutherford County became one of Tennessee's fastest-growing areas.

Today, Smyrna offers residents a combination of economic opportunity, suburban convenience, and strong community identity. The town continues to attract families and businesses due to its location near Nashville, strong employment market, quality schools, and growing amenities. Ongoing development, infrastructure investment, and residential expansion continue to position Smyrna as one of Middle Tennessee's leading communities for long-term growth and quality of life.
