Southmont, North Carolina, lies in the southern portion of Davidson County near the banks of High Rock Lake, one of the state's largest man-made reservoirs. The region's earliest inhabitants were members of the Saponi and Catawba tribes, who fished, hunted, and cultivated crops in the fertile Yadkin River basin. By the late 1700s, European settlers—mainly Scotch-Irish, English, and German immigrants—began establishing farms and mills along the Yadkin River. The area's rich soils, abundant timber, and access to water power made it ideal for agriculture and milling.

The community that would become Southmont developed in the 19th century as farming and river trade flourished. Early settlers raised tobacco, cotton, and grain, and operated gristmills and sawmills that served the growing population of southern Davidson County. The nearby town of Lexington became a regional hub for commerce, while smaller settlements like Southmont provided essential agricultural and trade functions. The extension of rail lines into Davidson County in the late 1800s improved transportation and communication, connecting Southmont's residents to larger markets in Salisbury, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte.

A major transformation came in the early 20th century with the creation of High Rock Lake in the 1920s. Constructed by the Tallassee Power Company (later Alcoa) as part of a hydroelectric project on the Yadkin River, the dam flooded large portions of farmland but also created new opportunities. Southmont evolved from a purely agricultural community into a lakeside town, attracting visitors, fishermen, and vacationers. The lake provided recreation and tourism opportunities while supporting the growth of nearby industries in Lexington and Salisbury.

Despite its relatively small size, Southmont maintained a strong sense of community throughout the 20th century. Churches, small businesses, and schools formed the backbone of local life. The Great Depression and World War II brought challenges, but the postwar years ushered in steady growth as improved roads and infrastructure made the area more accessible. The construction of modern highways, including U.S. Route 8 and N.C. Highway 47, linked Southmont more directly with Lexington and other Davidson County communities. During this period, many homes were built along High Rock Lake, transforming Southmont into a desirable residential and recreational area.

Today, Southmont is known for its peaceful lakeside living and close-knit community atmosphere. The combination of natural beauty and accessibility makes it a popular destination for retirees, families, and outdoor enthusiasts. High Rock Lake remains central to local life, offering boating, fishing, and scenic views. Although much of Southmont's economy is now residential and service-oriented, its agricultural and historical roots are still evident in its rural surroundings. Residents enjoy proximity to major cities like Winston-Salem and Charlotte while maintaining the relaxed pace and charm of a lakeside North Carolina community.
