Sugar Valley, a rural community in Gordon County, traces its roots back to Georgia's frontier period. Long before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited by Cherokee peoples, who made use of the fertile valley land and nearby rivers. Following the Cherokee removal in the 1830s, settlers established farms across the valley, and Sugar Valley developed into a farming community. Gordon County was created in 1850, and Sugar Valley became an important part of its agricultural foundation.

The local economy historically revolved around cotton, corn, and livestock farming. During the 19th century, cotton gins and small mills supported area farmers, creating a modest but steady local economy. Like much of northwest Georgia, Sugar Valley was directly affected by the Civil War. The Battle of Resaca, fought nearby in 1864, was a major clash during the Atlanta Campaign. Sugar Valley families endured hardships during this time, with farms and property often caught in the conflict. After the war, farming continued, though many families transitioned to subsistence crops and diversified their production.

Infrastructure slowly connected Sugar Valley to the larger region. The Western & Atlantic Railroad passed nearby, and later, U.S. Highway 41 provided better access to Calhoun and Dalton. Local roads connected farms and supported trade. The eventual construction of Interstate 75 further opened up the area, making travel more efficient for residents commuting to jobs in larger towns. Despite these changes, Sugar Valley remained primarily a farming and residential community.

Community life in Sugar Valley has long reflected its rural character. Churches served as focal points for social and spiritual life, while small schools educated generations of children before consolidation into the Gordon County school system. The community has preserved its agricultural heritage through family traditions and local pride. Though modest in size, Sugar Valley has always been close-knit, with residents bound by shared history and rural lifestyle.

Today, Sugar Valley offers a quiet, family-friendly atmosphere with easy access to nearby Calhoun and Dalton. Many residents enjoy the balance of rural living with proximity to larger cities and major highways. Its location near historic sites, including Resaca Battlefield, adds to its appeal for history enthusiasts. Sugar Valley continues to embody the values of simplicity, resilience, and community that have defined it since its founding.
