Supply is an unincorporated community in Brunswick County situated within the Coastal Plain of southeastern North Carolina. Long before European settlement, Indigenous peoples occupied the broader Cape Fear region and relied on its waterways, forests, wetlands, and coastal resources for transportation, food, and trade. European settlement expanded across what became Brunswick County during the colonial period, particularly as families established farms and small settlements away from the larger ports. Brunswick County itself was formed in 1764, and communities throughout its interior developed around roads, waterways, churches, farms, and local trading points. Supply emerged within this rural network rather than as a formally incorporated town, a characteristic that continues to influence its identity today.

Agriculture and forestry provided the economic foundation for Supply and much of central Brunswick County for generations. The region's pine forests supported timber harvesting and the historically important naval-stores industry, which produced tar, pitch, rosin, and turpentine for maritime and commercial uses. Farms produced corn, tobacco, vegetables, livestock, and other goods suited to the southeastern North Carolina climate. Local families often depended on a combination of farming, forestry, fishing, and small businesses. Supply's inland location also allowed residents to participate in the coastal economy without being directly exposed to the development patterns of the barrier islands.

Transportation gradually transformed Supply from a relatively isolated rural crossroads into a conveniently positioned community within Brunswick County's coastal corridor. U.S. Highway 17 became one of the most important north-south transportation routes through the county, connecting the area with Wilmington, Shallotte, and the Grand Strand of South Carolina. North Carolina Highway 211 provides another major connection, extending toward Southport and other communities to the east. Improvements to these highways and surrounding roads made shopping, employment, healthcare, schools, and coastal recreation substantially more accessible to residents.

Supply's location became increasingly significant as Brunswick County's beach communities grew during the twentieth century. Holden Beach, Ocean Isle Beach, and other nearby destinations developed into popular vacation and residential communities, creating demand for businesses and services on the mainland. Supply benefited from this growth while maintaining considerably more open space than the barrier islands. Commercial establishments, residential neighborhoods, healthcare services, and other development gradually appeared along the area's principal roads, creating a mix of rural and suburban characteristics.

The broader Supply area also reflects the environmental character of coastal North Carolina. Creeks, wetlands, pine forests, marshes, and waterways are common throughout the surrounding landscape, while the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway are only a short drive away. This geography has shaped everything from traditional occupations to modern recreation. Boating, fishing, beachgoing, and other outdoor activities are important parts of life throughout Brunswick County. At the same time, the region's coastal climate and low-lying terrain have influenced construction practices and development patterns over generations.

Today, Supply provides homeowners with a central location between several of Brunswick County's most popular coastal communities. Housing ranges from older rural properties and manufactured homes to established subdivisions and newer construction serving the county's growing population. Residents have convenient access to Holden Beach, Shallotte, Ocean Isle Beach, Southport, and other destinations while enjoying a setting that remains less densely developed than many beachfront areas. As Brunswick County continues to grow, Supply serves as an important mainland residential and service community connecting the county's rural heritage with its expanding coastal economy.
