The community of Tignall traces its origins to the early 19th century, when Wilkes County was one of the first counties created in Georgia following the Revolutionary War. The area was historically home to Creek and Cherokee people before being settled by European farmers who moved into the Piedmont region. Tignall itself emerged later in the century, named after Tignall Livingston Moss, a local citizen remembered for his service to the community. Like many towns in the county, its roots were tied closely to agriculture, particularly cotton production, which was the lifeblood of Wilkes County.

Agriculture dominated Tignall's early economy, with cotton serving as the primary cash crop. The area's fertile soil supported farming families who cultivated row crops while raising livestock. While railroads boosted growth in larger towns, Tignall remained more of a local farming community, yet the improved roads helped integrate it into the broader regional economy.
