Union Point's beginnings are rooted in Georgia's early expansion after the state's interior was opened to settlers following the displacement of the Creek and Cherokee peoples. Situated in Greene County, which was formed in 1786, Union Point derived its name from its strategic location as a junction of several early roads and, later, a vital railroad hub. Its position made it a "meeting point" for commerce and community life in the region. The fertile soil of Greene County made it ideal for agriculture, and cotton quickly became the dominant crop, shaping the local economy.

The economy of Union Point was built on farming, particularly cotton production, which thrived during the 19th century. As with many southern towns, enslaved labor underpinned this agricultural success until the Civil War. Following emancipation, farming continued but transitioned into sharecropping and tenant farming, which sustained the cotton economy for decades. By the late 1800s, the arrival of the Georgia Railroad further transformed Union Point into an important center of trade, as cotton and other goods could be transported more efficiently to Augusta and Atlanta. Railroads were critical to Union Point's development, and by the late 19th century, the town became a major rail junction. The Georgia Railroad expanded its lines through the area, boosting commerce and population growth. Streets and small-town infrastructure developed around the depot, with businesses, hotels, and civic buildings appearing to serve both residents and travelers. The coming of U.S. Highway 278 and other regional road networks in the 20th century further connected Union Point with surrounding towns. While the decline of passenger rail travel diminished some of its railroad significance, the transportation legacy continues to shape the town's layout and history.

Union Point developed a close-knit community character centered on its institutions. Churches were vital to spiritual and social life, while schools educated generations of residents. The town also became known for Union Point Academy and its local cultural activities, which emphasized education and civic pride. Demographics shifted gradually as families moved between rural farms and the town center, yet Union Point maintained its reputation as a welcoming and industrious community. Civic events, fairs, and church gatherings reflected its traditional Southern small-town identity.

Today, Union Point is recognized for its history and its position within the Lake Oconee region. While agriculture remains a part of its cultural landscape, proximity to recreation, lake communities, and heritage tourism has given the town new vitality. Its historic downtown buildings and railroad past continue to draw interest, and residents enjoy the balance of quiet small-town life with access to the amenities of Greensboro and other nearby centers. Union Point remains a place where history and modern living intersect in Greene County.
