Wadesboro, the county seat of Anson County, has a history stretching back to the American Revolutionary era. Founded in 1783 by Captain Patrick Boggan and Colonel Thomas Wade, the settlement was originally known as "New Town." Four years later, in 1787, the North Carolina General Assembly renamed it "Wadesboro" in honor of Colonel Wade, a Revolutionary War patriot and early civic leader in the area. Its location near the Pee Dee River made it a natural center for regional trade and governance.

The early economy of Wadesboro was based on agriculture, timber, and river commerce. Farmers cultivated cotton, corn, and tobacco, while the Pee Dee River provided a means to transport goods to larger markets. By the mid-19th century, Wadesboro had grown into a thriving town with stores, churches, schools, and a courthouse at its center. The arrival of the railroad in the 1850s marked a turning point in local development, allowing goods to be shipped faster and drawing new businesses and settlers to the area.

As transportation evolved, Wadesboro adapted. The establishment of U.S. Route 74 and U.S. Route 52 strengthened its position as a regional hub, connecting it to Charlotte, Rockingham, and beyond. The construction of modern roadways and infrastructure improvements in the 20th century helped sustain the local economy even as agricultural dependence waned. Textile production, small manufacturing, and trade complemented the traditional farming economy, keeping the town prosperous and self-sufficient.

Wadesboro has always been known for its strong civic life and sense of tradition. Its historic courthouse square remains a focal point of community activity, and the town is home to several structures that date back to the 19th century. Annual events, local festivals, and arts programs reinforce Wadesboro's small-town character and celebrate its role as the heart of Anson County.
