Shelbyville serves as the county seat of Bedford County and has long been recognized as one of Middle Tennessee's most historically significant communities. The area was originally inhabited by Native American groups, including the Cherokee and Chickasaw, before European-American settlement expanded into the region during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Bedford County was officially established in 1807 and named after Thomas Bedford, a Revolutionary War officer. Shelbyville itself was founded shortly afterward and named in honor of Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky.
