Waxhaw, located in southern Union County near the South Carolina border, is among the most historically rich towns in the Piedmont region. The area originally belonged to the Waxhaw Tribe, a Siouan-speaking Native American people whose settlements once spread across the Carolina piedmont. Their legacy endures in the town's name. European settlers—primarily of Scots-Irish and German descent—arrived in the mid-1700s, drawn by fertile soil, abundant timber, and access to trading paths. These pioneers established farms and small trading posts along what became known as the Great Wagon Road, one of the major migration routes through the Carolinas.

By the mid-19th century, Waxhaw developed into a small agricultural hub. Cotton and corn dominated local farms, and sawmills and gristmills dotted the creeks. The arrival of the railroad in 1888 transformed the community from a rural farming area into a thriving trade town. The train depot became the heart of Waxhaw, bringing in supplies, shipping out cotton, and stimulating business growth. The town was officially incorporated in 1889, and by the early 1900s, it boasted general stores, blacksmiths, banks, and other small industries that supported its residents.

Infrastructure improvements throughout the 20th century helped shape the Waxhaw we know today. State highways connected the town to Charlotte and Monroe, encouraging growth while maintaining its rural character. As the textile industry spread across the Piedmont, Waxhaw became home to cotton gins and small mills. Modernization brought electricity, paved roads, and schools, yet the town's center retained its distinct small-town charm, with many of its brick storefronts still standing today.

Waxhaw's community spirit and preservation efforts have made it one of Union County's most beloved historic towns. The downtown district is now a registered historic area, celebrated for its preserved 19th-century architecture and the charming pedestrian bridge that crosses the old rail line. The town hosts annual festivals, farmers markets, and parades that highlight its strong sense of heritage and community pride. Waxhaw's population has grown significantly in recent decades as families and professionals have moved in, attracted by its quaint downtown, quality schools, and proximity to Charlotte.

Today, Waxhaw perfectly blends the old and the new. It remains a symbol of small-town North Carolina living, offering boutique shops, restaurants, and green spaces while preserving the quiet rhythm of its origins.
