Wilmington is one of North Carolina's most historically important coastal cities and occupies a strategic location along the Cape Fear River in New Hanover County. Long before European colonization, Indigenous peoples inhabited the lower Cape Fear region and relied on the river, surrounding wetlands, forests, and coastal waters for transportation and resources. European settlement expanded during the early eighteenth century, and the community that became Wilmington grew as a river port serving plantations and settlements across southeastern North Carolina. The city was incorporated during the colonial period and was named for Spencer Compton, Earl of Wilmington.

The Cape Fear River made Wilmington an important commercial center. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the port handled timber, naval stores, agricultural products, and other goods moving between inland North Carolina and Atlantic markets. Tar, pitch, rosin, and turpentine became especially important to the regional economy because of the extensive pine forests surrounding the Cape Fear basin. Shipbuilding, warehousing, milling, and merchant businesses developed along the riverfront, helping Wilmington emerge as one of the state's leading commercial communities.

Transportation infrastructure continually reshaped the city. Railroads strengthened Wilmington's connections with inland North Carolina during the nineteenth century, allowing agricultural and industrial products to reach the port more efficiently. Roadways later connected the city with neighboring counties and beach communities, while bridges across the Cape Fear River improved access to Brunswick County. Modern highways including U.S. 17, U.S. 74, and Interstate 40 established Wilmington as an important transportation hub for southeastern North Carolina.

Wilmington's historic downtown reflects centuries of architectural and cultural development. Residential streets feature examples of Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Victorian, and twentieth-century architecture, while the riverfront contains historic commercial buildings adapted for restaurants, shops, offices, and entertainment. The city's history also includes major Civil War activity, Reconstruction-era change, and the deeply consequential Wilmington events of 1898, which remain an important part of North Carolina's political and racial history.

The twentieth century brought continued diversification. The Port of Wilmington remained economically important, while military activity, manufacturing, healthcare, education, tourism, and film production became significant contributors to the local economy. The University of North Carolina Wilmington grew into a major educational institution, and the city's location near Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and Kure Beach strengthened its reputation as both a residential and visitor destination. Wilmington also developed a substantial film and television production industry, earning recognition as an important production center on the East Coast.

Today, Wilmington combines historic neighborhoods, suburban development, coastal amenities, higher education, healthcare, port activity, and a growing regional economy. The 28401 area includes much of downtown and some of the city's oldest residential fabric, giving homeowners access to distinctive architecture and established neighborhoods. Residents enjoy the Riverwalk, cultural institutions, restaurants, parks, and convenient access to the Atlantic coast. Wilmington's blend of historic character and continuing growth makes it one of southeastern North Carolina's most significant residential and economic centers.
