Wrightsville Beach is a barrier-island town east of Wilmington and one of North Carolina's best-known coastal communities. Long before resort development, Indigenous peoples used the broader coastal region's sounds, marshes, tidal creeks, forests, and ocean resources. European settlement concentrated initially around the Cape Fear River and Wilmington, leaving the barrier islands comparatively undeveloped. By the nineteenth century, however, Wilmington residents increasingly viewed the beaches east of the city as attractive destinations for fishing, bathing, and relief from the summer heat. The community that became Wrightsville Beach gradually emerged from this growing interest in coastal recreation.

The late nineteenth century brought a dramatic transformation as transportation improvements made the beach accessible to larger numbers of visitors. Rail and trolley connections between Wilmington and the coast allowed families to travel to Wrightsville Beach without the difficulty that had previously accompanied reaching the barrier island. Hotels, clubs, cottages, restaurants, and recreational facilities followed. The town was incorporated in 1899, and Wrightsville Beach developed into one of the state's prominent early seaside resorts.

Tourism became the community's economic foundation, but its cultural importance extended beyond ordinary beach recreation. During the early twentieth century, Wrightsville Beach became known for dancing, music, boating, fishing, and social gatherings. The Lumina Pavilion, opened in 1905, became a celebrated entertainment venue and an iconic part of the area's resort era. Although the original structure no longer stands, its legacy remains an important part of Wrightsville Beach history and illustrates the community's longstanding relationship with recreation and coastal tourism.

Transportation continued to evolve as automobiles replaced streetcars and modern bridges improved access between the mainland and the island. Roads connecting Wrightsville Beach with Wilmington transformed the community from a primarily seasonal resort into a practical year-round residential location. The development of the Intracoastal Waterway also reinforced the area's maritime character by creating a protected navigation route used by recreational and commercial vessels. Marinas, boat docks, and waterfront residences became prominent features of the local landscape.

The community has also repeatedly adapted to hurricanes, coastal erosion, flooding, and changing shorelines. Storms have damaged buildings and infrastructure throughout Wrightsville Beach's history, requiring rebuilding and influencing construction practices. Elevated structures, wind-resistant construction, flood considerations, corrosion-resistant materials, and shoreline management have become increasingly important. Despite these challenges, demand for residential and vacation property has remained strong because of the town's location and recreational appeal.

Today, Wrightsville Beach is known for its beaches, boating culture, surfing, paddle sports, fishing, waterfront dining, and proximity to Wilmington. The community includes historic cottages, luxury waterfront homes, condominiums, established neighborhoods, and modern coastal construction. Residents benefit from easy access to Wilmington's employment centers, healthcare, shopping, and cultural institutions while living directly within a barrier-island environment. Its combination of history, recreation, waterfront property, and strong regional accessibility continues to make Wrightsville Beach one of southeastern North Carolina's most recognizable coastal communities.
